“I think I know what I did wrong on the sauce the other night,” Mim said to me that evening. We were in the kitchen again, making another attempt at burritos. The woman was obsessed. If these turned out as bad as the last ones, I wasn’t going to be able to blame my upset stomach totally on nerves.

“I looked it up online,” she said. “The trick is to cut the canned sauce with another can of tomato sauce. So what did you think of Fielding?”

I was getting used to Mim’s sudden changes of direction. Whichever way she went it was still straight ahead, and it was pointless not to go with her.

“I liked her okay,” I said. “She’s a little pushy, maybe.”

“A little? The girl’s a bulldozer.”

I laughed and accidentally spit into the chicken.

“Don’t worry about it,” Mim said. “A little saliva can only improve on it. I was just like her at that age.”

“At that age?” I said—and then went straight to a ten on the blushing scale. What was wrong with me today?

“Am I to infer from that you think I’m still that way?”

“No, ma’am!”

I looked up to find her eyes twinkling. “Then what were you implying?”

“You aren’t like that now,” I said slowly, into the pile of chicken bits. “But you were when, you know, we visited you in Hawaii. But, then, I was just a kid—”

“And I was obnoxious.”

I started to disagree but she was shaking her head at me. She tapped the wooden spoon on the edge of the pan and set it on the counter so she could stick her hands in the pockets of her cargo pants.

“I don’t know how anybody stood me, Bryn, to tell you the truth,” she said. “I had an ego the size of the Atlantic. Make that the Pacific. And I flattened anybody who couldn’t roll with me. I know I flattened you.”

I fiddled with the knife.

“It’s all right to say it, Bryn. You need to say it.”

“Why?”

“Because you need to see that your feelings count. That not everybody you disagree with is going to attack you for it.”

I looked up at her, because her voice was thick, the way it was the day at the courthouse. Those eyes, so filled with tears, weren’t going to hurt me.

“Okay,” I said. “I hated being at your house. You tried to turn me into something I wasn’t.”

“And there is nothing worse that a person who supposedly loves you can do to you, is there?”

I shook my head.

“You need to say it out loud.”

“No, there isn’t,” I said. “But everybody ends up doing it.”

She came to the stool next to mine and sat down. When I didn’t look up, she took my face in her hands and lifted it to hers. “Who, Bryn? Who has tried to make you into someone else?”

“Preston,” I said between my teeth. “His friends. Dad.”

“Really.”

“I think Dad wants me to be a fighter, like Tara would be if this were happening to her.” I felt my own eyes fill.
